Rock Pools and Shoreline walks around Tranquillity Bay.
“Rocks not only contain the history of the world, but they also contain the history of humanity: our settlements, our burials, our wars, our agriculture, our travel and our trade.”
Dr.Richard Davey - Essay titled “Looking, Learning, Being.” 2025.
The work, here was exhibited in “Sense and Presence“ at the Artmill Gallery Plymouth This is a visual encounter with the shoreline from Millbay to Devil’s Point. Drawing and painting exploits, an encounter with the phenomenon of mark-making, whether using dry or wet media, a creative process, visual language unique to my visual observations and experiences. Decisions are made, problems solved, the history of marks, whether large or small, precise or hidden, establish, connections and form relationships. They organically become a clear statement of intent. There are two parts to this body of work. The first 16 images are from walking, experiencing and collecting fragments - rocks. These “finds” became a vital method to retrace the path along along the walked line, on the shoreline. Each drawing is a sensory moment, a memory, touch, smell, taste, observation and imagined experience. The large 10 drawings represent a more recent return over the last 18 months, again walking and recording, but trying to look closer and harder. The “finds” were literarily under my feet. Walking on slippery seaweed and wet rocks forces you to look down. The future may bring work that looks forward and even looking up and looking out, even on the periphery of my vision.
